How to Continue a Form』
9-volume book series2026 Published by form(n)

How to Continue a Form rewrites the events and movements Alice experiences in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as instructions for continuing a form, and applies each instruction to the page. The original passages on which the instructions are based are cited in footnotes. The series consists of nine books, beginning with a single form and using each transformed state as the starting point for the next. First presented at Gunsan Art Book Fair 2026.
PROPOSAL 01/ Forms Following Sentences is a book that retains only the subjects and predicates from notes collected over the past ten years. Following the resulting sentences, forms were created to explore through graphic experiments how the relationships and movements within language can develop into visual form. 《타입 오브 파운드리》 〈Letters Built from Blocks〉Mixed media installation (Blocks, MDF), Dimensions variable2025Organized by PCO

For Riwon Kim, the Latin alphabet is perceived as a formative system of shapes rather than a carrier of meaning. 〈Letters Built from Blocks〉 is a visual manifestation of her typeface design process. Instead of drawing characters on grid paper, she constructs them through a playful cycle of stacking, transforming, deconstructing, and reassembling blocks.

In this process, the blocks function as modules for creating the original forms, and the finished characters retain the distinct, rugged structural characteristics of those blocks. While the resulting letterforms follow a sans-serif structure, they bear the subtle traces of human touch. However, these are not the strokes of handwriting, but the results of assembly. Thus, her work diverges from traditional Humanist Sans-serifs, which are rooted in calligraphic traces.

In this way, Riwon Kim’s 〈Letters Built from Blocks〉 deconstructs and reconstructs the formative principles and characteristics of the sans-serif typeface, a staple of modern design conventions.

Paper, Foam board, and Mixed media2020, 2024University of Seoul MA Degree Show 2025

〈Rounded Paper Letters〉
Material / Act / Language is a series of experiments that analyze the inherent properties of an object and the attitudes toward handling them, translating these findings into a unified visual language.
Rounded Paper Letters explores the potential of custom typefaces and graphic modules built from the most fundamental units. This is achieved by converting the physical properties of analog paper into a digital grid system.
Beyond merely creating forms, the project focuses on establishing a structural order that maintains the unique texture of manual work while flexibly adapting to various media. It aims to build an independent graphic language and system based on the formal principles of materiality.

〈블럭을 쌓아 만든 글자 Letters Built from Blocks〉
Block and Mixed media2025University of Seoul MA Degree Show 2025

This project captures the process of modularizing formal clues discovered through the characteristics of the previous Flattened Paper Letters within a systematic framework. By re-printing, cutting, and folding the flattened letters, I engage in a physical exploration of clues. The fragments captured during this process are then reconstructed into standardized modules using blocks.
I have built this sequential process upon three key terms: ‘Generation, Exploration, and Intermediate Zone.’ My goal was to capture forms that originate as ambiguous masses before being signified, explore meaningful fragments within them, and finally reside in the ‘intermediate zone’—the boundary between letterforms and graphics. The resulting block structures are designed to be read as legible letters by some and abstract graphics by others depending on the viewer's perspective, experimenting with the inherent fluidity of visual symbols.

〈아크릴을 끼워 만든 형태, Forms Built by Interlocking Acrylic〉
Acrylic2025University of Seoul MA Degree Show 2025

Forms Built by Interlocking Acrylic originates from the fundamental question: ‘Is the form of an object as we perceive it truly complete?’ Reflecting mathematician Andreas Speiser's insight that an object can never be fully grasped from a single perspective and remains inherently incomplete, I sought to erase conventional forms. By leaving only functional clues and reassembling the structure, I experimented with whether the object could still be recognized as its original self.
Treating the chair—my subject of experiment—as a symbolic sculpture rather than mere furniture, inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, I explored the minimum structure required for sitting. Using the geometric clues discovered in the previous Letters Built from Blocks project as modules, I designed intersections of vertical and horizontal planes and assembled them into various forms. The resulting structures are not definitive furniture but rather visualizations of a potential state of sitting, exploring the gap between observer perception and the essence of an object.

〈목재를 박아 만든 형태, Forms Built by Joining Wood〉
MDF, Mixed media2025University of Seoul MA Degree Show 2025

As an extension of Forms Built by Interlocking Acrylic, this project focuses on composing masses while intentionally stripping away function and meaning, utilizing formal clues from previous works. While the preceding work used the functional cues of a 'chair' as a structural basis, this project adopts 'non-functionality' itself as a primary condition. The structures are designed to provide no support from any direction, ensuring that their forms are perceived differently from every viewing angle.
The resulting structures may appear as sculptures or objects, yet they do not aim for specific practical utility. This intentional ambiguity allows them to be read as a formal language or simply as an assembly of wooden elements, leaving the interpretation entirely open. Moving away from the conventional premise of graphic design—which prioritizes clear information delivery—this work explores the repetitive assembly and observation of meaningless fragments as a starting point. This marks the final series of research, exploring new forms initiated from the clues of previous endeavors.

This project explores the process of transforming three-dimensional mass into visual symbols through the act of assembling standardized Lego modules. The structural forms, built by stacking physical blocks, oscillate between recognizable ‘letterforms’ and abstract ‘shapes’ depending on the observer's perspective.
To visualize this fluidity of viewpoint, the letterforms are displayed within acrylic boxes with integrated mirrors, allowing for simultaneous observation from multiple angles. The formal clues extracted from these 3D structures are translated into 2D sketches, eventually extending into functional forms such as the surfaces of exhibition tables. This experiment demonstrates the cyclical process of converting 3D materiality into 2D logic and back into physical form, showcasing how letterforms can transcend media and dimensions.

《Tele-》 〈단서 덩어리 a dummy of clues〉 Motion graphic, Typographyfaction, 2024Organized by UOS(Visual Design & Sculpture, MA)

This project is a typographic experiment that traces the formal phenomena occurring when Hangul typefaces reach extreme thickness. By intentionally omitting the structural elements required for legibility and leaving behind only minimal clues—such as positional values and color—I explored the ambiguous boundary between letters and flat Deongeori (graphics).
Initially unveiled as a video work for the group exhibition 〈tele-〉, the project later expanded into a large-scale banner installation and a 450-page archive book. This evolution visualizes the 'transference of senses,' where digital screens are transcended to take on the physical volume and weight of a tangible object.

Lettering2020Organized by Leedotype

Hand-lettering for 《50 People, 50 Types》, 2020 World Korean Language Convention
I participated in the special exhibition 50 People, 50 Types, where the names of world capitals were reinterpreted through Korean lettering. My assigned city was 'San José,' the capital of Costa Rica.
To visualize the identity of Costa Rica—a world-renowned coffee producer—I adopted the 'fluid form between liquid and gas' that emerges during the coffee extraction process as my formal motif. By reflecting the intersection of liquid viscosity and gaseous buoyancy into the strokes of the characters, I embodied the city's warm and vibrant energy through organic curves.
